Millions of people expected the world to end on December 21. They believed it had been foretold by the ancient Mayans, who created a detailed calendar that pinpointed the date the world would end.

Ivan Semeniuk says there are plenty of interesting things about the Mayan calendar, and about the Mayans, but scientists have long known they were not forecasting the end of the world.
