The lasting legacy of CBGB

tumblr_lw0xkdiOrm1qcj1mho1_500.jpgIt is a legendary nightclub, a place that just about every music fan wishes they were able to visit.

CBGB wasn't much to look at. In fact, it was kind of a hole. But it was the place where bands like The Ramones, Blondie and Television learned their craft, and as a result is considered as important as The Cavern in Liverpool.

The club has been closed for years, but there's been a bit of a revival in interest in CBGB. A documentary on the club came out a couple of years ago, and now there's talk of a music festival, a feature film and perhaps even a new club bearing the old name.

Geoff Pevere is Airplay's pop culture columnist, and he's in agreement with almost all of those ideas, with the notable exception of opening a new club to try and recapture the grotty glory of CBGB.
