Everest ascents too dangerous for rookies
The top of the world was a very different place where Laurie Skreslet was the first Canadian to reach it.
When Skreslet climbed to the top of Mount Everest in 1982, the world's highest mountain attracted only serious mountaineers, people with a great deal of experience.
These days companies offer well-heeled hikers a shot at the summit, regardless of their experience. That has led to backlogs as dozens of people try to summit on the same day, and those backlogs can cause death.
