Italian accident exposes a hero gap

The Italian cruise ship captain is being vilified for abandoning his ship, the Costa Concordia, after it struck rocks and began to sink. Schettino stood on shore while thousands of passengers scrambled to escape the stricken vessel.

It's not a real surprise to Frank Farley, a professor of psychology at Temple University.
