U.S. piracy laws prompt online protest

Some of the most popular websites in the world, sites like Wikipedia and BoingBoing, have decided to voluntarily shut down for a time to protest proposed new anti-piracy laws in the United States.

The Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act (SOPA and PIPA) would give American authorities sweeping powers that would extend beyond their country's borders.
