Listen to this episode as streaming audio (runs 27 minutes approx):
Terry O’Reilly tracks a seismic shift in the marketing world: the fall of Television as the “flagship” ad medium, and the rise of a radical new trend: marketing through ideas.
Instead of using advertising to reach teenage males, Burger King created its own series of Xbox 360 games, featuring its “King” character. After two million sales in just five weeks, Burger King equates the number of “brand impressions” to that of 13 Super Bowl ads.
When General Electric wanted to promote its brand at the Beijing Olympics, the tactic it chose was infrastructure. Instead of expensive Olympic advertising, GE helped build a water filtration plant, through which it hopes its brand will resonate for years.
“Ideas” as the hottest new ad medium, this week on The Age of Persuasion.
Terry O'Reilly is back exploring the countless ways marketers permeate your life, from media, art, and language, to politics, religion, and fashion.

I just want to comment on how refreshing AOP is, and how relieved I am to see it back for another season. I live just south of the border in Vermont, where we are fortunate enough to receive CBC Radio 1 from Montreal. I listen faithfully every week, and wish there was a podcast.
I have to say that there are many of us down here who wish we were Canadians! The quality of CBC and the programming is really unmatched here in the US, and I feel lucky that at least I can listen from home.
Thank you, thank you....I look forward to the next one!

Terry and Company - Caught the show on Saturday. Realy enjoyed. Please hurry up with the podcasts. Also you mention you mentioned one ad agency David Dubrovink (sp ?) could you give me the correct spelling. Also please provide a few links mentioned in the show as I'd like to educate/read more about a few of the things that you talked about...
I missed a bit at the beginning did you talk about subliminal advertising - I'd like your opinions.

I live in India and am pursuing my graduation in advertising. CBC Radio is not aired in India. Is there a way that I can listen to the episodes of AOP?

Please, please, please podcast this show! I only ever seem to catch snippets of it.

Long time listener, first time caller.
Love the show, love the show, would love a podcast of the show.

Hey AOP crew. Missed an episode and popped by your homepage, I have now spent the whole morning listening and have had the most productive day this week. (Mind you, it is Tuesday). I can only imagine the time and effort to produce a show of this quality; however, any thought to posting a show of material that did not make it to air? Maybe a show of general ideas and thoughts in a conversational manner with advertising/media types discussing the industry in general? By the way I own season 1 (Age of Advertising) and lent it out, last I heard the set was in BC with my coworkers son, who's snowboarding out there!

CORRECTIONS to your introduction.
1. the game is not instead of advertising. it is in addition to a massive advertising platform. this is a big difference.
2. the water filtration plant never happened. this was an idea that got rejected because no one is ready to spend an olympic media budget on such a risky alternative idea. in addition there was no way the chinese government was going to approve it.
