It Was the Dance

It Was the Dance - (45:04)

In 1942, a 17-year-old Austrian Jewish refugee and a black Canadian soldier meet at a London dance hall, fall in love and marry.

After the war they return to Canada, eager to start a new life in New Brunswick. But in the Fredericton of the 1940s, 50s and 60s, the effects of racism and social barriers they face make staying together, raising a family and finding peace a constant challenge.

This documentary tells their story. It also examines the complex history and reality of racism that remains in New Brunswick today.
