Profile: Madeleine Redfern

Madeleine Redfern is the mayor of Iqaluit, Nunavut (elected in 2010). She has a law degree and was the first Inuk to be offered a clerkship at the Supreme Court of Canada. She was also executive director of the Qikiqtani Truth Commission, which chronicled Inuit recollections of the relationship between Inuit and non-Inuit people from the 1950s through the 1970s.

She was born in Iqaluit to an Inuk mother and a father who immigrated from England. She has been critical of the unsatisfactory education system and poor infrastructure in Nunavut and has been quoted as saying Nunavut is "a chilly banana republic". Redfern was interview for the television series 8TH Fire.
