Profile: Nadya Kwandibens

More about some of the people from the 8th Fire TV series.

Nadya Kwandibens is Anishinaabe and French from the Northwest Angle #37 First Nation in Ontario.

She is based in Toronto and much of her work explores the identity of urban Aboriginal people as illustrated in her popular Concrete Indian photography series.

"I remember one time my Dad telling me this nickname that old folks used to have in the day for Native folks moving to the city. He said they call them Concrete Indians. And I thought hey, that's the name for the series".

Kwandibens is hoping that her photography can help change the way Aboriginal people are seen in the media.

"If you did see First Nations people in the media, it always had a negative vibe. And that got me thinking, there's something I can do as an artist."
