Dianne Buckner has established herself as a skilled interviewer, writer, and producer, and an accomplished speaker. She has reported on entrepreneurs for two decades and is part of the business news team at CBC.
She started her career as a network host on the popular consumer affairs show Live It Up! on CTV. She also reported for CTV National News, and was back-up host for Canada AM. She moved to CBC Television in 1991, as a reporter with the award-winning business affairs show Venture, eventually working her way up to host and executive producer of the program. The successful and long-running series chronicled the adventures of entrepreneurs. Over the years Venture won an array of Canadian and international awards.
When Venture retired from the airwaves in 2007, Buckner co-created Fortune Hunters for CBC Newsworld, a program focused on entrepreneurship. It ran for two seasons, focusing on the social and consumer trends that create opportunities for entrepreneurs.
In the course of her work, Buckner has spoken with prime ministers, celebrity CEOs such as Jack Welch and super investor Warren Buffet, and has traveled extensively to countries such as Japan, Australia, the Netherlands and Iceland in pursuit of stories.
Buckner now works as host on Dragons' Den, where eager entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas to a group of self-made Canadian millionaire investors.
"I've hosted other big ratings winners in my career," Buckner says. "Venture had a big and loyal audience. And way back when I was at CTV, Live It Up! was also extremely popular. But people seem to love Dragons' Den with a passion I've never experienced before."
In addition to Dragons' Den, Buckner reports on breaking news stories in the world of business for CBC's local 6 o'clock newscasts across the country, and writes a column for cbcnews.ca about small business. She also argues regularly with Kevin O'Leary as a back-up host on his daily business show The Lang and O'Leary Exchange, which airs on CBC News Network.
Buckner lives in Toronto with her husband and two children.
