Image of the Day: Important delivery
(CBC Still Photo Collection)
The tapes of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill's funeral arrive at Shearwater RCAF in Nova Scotia on Jan. 30, 1965.
The Royal Air Force Vulcan delivered the tapes to the base, because Halifax was selected as the closest broadcasting centre from London.
Churchill had died on Jan. 24 and his funeral was held after he lay in state for three days.
After the footage arrived in Canada it was transported about 15 km by helicopter to the Halifax Central Commons before being escorted by police car to CBC Television's CBHT studios. After the footage arrived, it was telecast 13 minutes later. The English funeral coverage was fed across Canada and to two networks in the United States.
