Image of the Day: Churchill's funeral tapes
(CBC Still Photo Collection)
The Halifax Police were on hand at the Central Commons as tapes of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill's funeral arrived on Jan. 30, 1965. The police escorted the tapes to CBC Halifax for broadcast.
Churchill had died on Jan. 24 and his funeral was held after he lay in state for three days.
Halifax was selected as the delivery point for the funeral footage, because the Shearwater RCAF base was the closest flying distance from London. The footage arrived in Canada on a Royal Air Force Vulcan and was then transported about 15 km by helicopter to the Commons before being escorted by car to CBC Television's CBHT studios.
After the footage arrived, it was telecast 13 minutes later. The English funeral coverage was fed across Canada and to two networks in the United States.
