CBC first commissioned Anne of Green Gables to be made into a television film in 1956. Based on Lucy Maud Montgomery's beloved novel, the musical was directed by Don Harron.

Toby Tarnow starred as Anne Shirley while Margot Christie played Marilla Cuthbert and John Drainie portrayed Matthew Cuthbert.

The movie inspired Anne of Green Gables: The Musical, which still plays in Charlottetown every summer. It first opened in the city during the Charlottetown Festival in 1965.

CBC later commissioned another, more famous version of Anne of Green Gables - the 1985 film adaption, starring Megan Follows as Anne.
