VANCOUVER - British Columbia's poultry industry in the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland will be virtually wiped out over the next few weeks, after the federal government ordered the mass slaughter of about 19 million chickens and turkeys.
The extreme measure is aimed at stopping the spread of avian flu.
Chicken and turkey farms across the Fraser Valley will begin systematically killing their flocks immediately. It means farmers will wipe out about 80 per cent of the province's poultry stock.
