Chr�tien wins solid majority

MONTREAL - Jean Chr�tien's Liberals have rolled to an impressive majority in the 2000 election, with surprising gains in Quebec where they matched the seats of Gilles Duceppe's Bloc Qu�b�cois.
Chr�tien thus becomes the first prime minister to win a third consecutive majority government since Mackenzie King in the 1940s.
At midnight the Liberals were leading and elected in 172 seats, with the Canadian Alliance at 67 seats, a gain of nine seats for the new party. The Liberals began the campaign with 161 seats.
