OTTAWA - North America is still a few hours away from officially welcoming the year 2000 with people in St. John's, Newfoundland awaiting the distinction of the first millennium celebration on the continent.
The coming of January 1, 2000 has been celebrated as midnight fell across the global time zones from east to west. Celebrations have included cultural exhibitions, fireworks dancing and as much noise as possible.
Islanders in the South Pacific were the first people in the world to begin ringing in Year 2000 earlier today. Traditional dancers started celebrations on the recently-renamed Millennium Island in Kiribati, which is celebrating its first sunrise of the new millennium.
