WINNIPEG - Winnipeg gave itself a huge pat on the back last night as the biggest sporting and cultural event ever held in Canada drew to a close. The 13th Pan American Games were called the best-run in the history of the competition, and Canada set a record for its medal performance.
Controversies over performance-enhancing drugs and defections were forgotten for the closing ceremonies, watched by as many as 400 million TV viewers.
Despite high-profile positive drug tests -- and the resulting gold medal forfeits -- the games were very clean, said the president of the Pan American Sport Association, Mario Vasquez Rana.
