MARTHA'S VINEYARD - After two days in a high-profile "search and rescue" mission, the U.S. Coast Guard is shifting to "search and recovery" mode. Officials informed the family Sunday night that John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife and sister-in-law probably died in a Friday night plane crash.
Coast Guard Rear Admiral Richard M. Larrabee said he'd informed the families earlier in the evening that they had moved beyond any realistic hope of finding survivors.
"It was a difficult phone call for me and I'm sure it was much more difficult for them," Larrabee said.
