On this date a few hundred visitors log on to watch Infoculture's first webcast, featuring a lecture by American musician and scientist Jaron Lanier (who's probably best-known for coining the term "virtual reality.")

Laniers lecture is the first in a two-year run of weekly webcasts for the site, co-produced with the Canadian Film Centre as part of its Interactive Arena series.

Infoculture goes on to produce live webcasts from a number of other cultural events, including coverage from the red carpet of the Genie Awards and the much-anticipated premiere of Star Wars: Episode 1 - Phantom Menace at midnight on March 11, 1999.
