On Canada Day 1997, the CBC4Kids.ca website goes public. The site, a project of CBC Radio, aims to bring kids aged 7-12 into the CBC fold.
Site content is a mix of original material, plus editorial content from CBC Radio programs and staff rewritten for a younger audience. There are also games, quizzes, science experiments, homework help and a gallery of users' pet photos. Later additions include contests and discussion forums.
In its original format, the site is offered in both high and low bandwidth versions. The "intense" version features animated icons and a slick red border reminiscent of an Etch-a-Sketch.
